Cardiff High School

Safe, Seamless and Architecturally Integrated

The Challenge

Cardiff High School required a new covered solution for its assisted transport drop-off area, along with a protected pedestrian link to the administration block and central courtyard. While a footpath existed, there was no overhead shelter, leaving students, including those in wheelchairs, exposed to weather during arrival and departure. The brief was to design and construct a cantilevered shelter over the designated drop-off zone and deliver a connected covered walkway. Safety, accessibility, durability and compliance were critical priorities. The structure needed to accommodate bus and truck height clearances, integrate tactile indicators and bollards and compliment the school’s main street frontage. Complicating factors included working around an existing ramp with a drop edge on one side, managing live drop-off and pick-up times with careful staging, building in the school’s street frontage without impacting daily operations and ensuring zero disruption due to the HSC examination period.

Our Solution

Walkwayz designed and delivered a certified aluminium walkway system incorporating a custom cantilevered structure to maximise weather protection while maintaining vehicle clearance. Originally proposed as a PVC shade structure, the Walkwayz team recommended a solid aluminium cantilevered solution to provide greater shelter, improved durability and reduced long-term maintenance, while still remaining within budget. Key features included:

  • Cantilevered aluminium shelter engineered for required vehicle heights
  • Connected covered walkway to administration block and courtyard
  • Integrated lighting with automatic timing controls
  • Concealed gutters, downpipes and stormwater connections
  • Tactile indicators, bollards and compliant line marking to enhance safety
  • Powder-coated, low-maintenance aluminium structure

Noisy works were scheduled during holidays and outside school hours, with activities coordinated around HSC exams. Existing in-ground services and stormwater connections were managed on site without impact to programme or budget. The project was delivered on time, within budget and with minimal disruption.

The Result

The completed walkway provides safe, visually appealing all-weather access from assisted transport drop-off through to key school facilities. It enhances accessibility, improves safety and delivers long-term durability with minimal maintenance. Importantly, the structure complements the existing facade and strengthens the school’s street presence. Positioned at the main community entry point, it appears seamlessly integrated and is a key benefit that stood out for the client. Cardiff High School now benefits from a compliant, architecturally cohesive and future-ready covered walkway solution delivered with clear communication, professional delivery, reliable programming and no-fuss execution.
