Maitland Grossmann High School

Connected, Protected and Future-Ready

The Challenge

Following significant changes to the school layout, Maitland Grossmann High School required improved accessibility, connectivity and weather protection across the campus. The addition of numerous demountable classrooms created new student movement pathways and increased demand for safe, all-weather access between learning spaces. The school had failing retaining walls that needed to be replaced, a grandstand that needed extended weather protection and the need for a large-scale covered solution that could support outdoor learning, student connection and classroom gatherings. All works needed to be installed efficiently as it was delivered within a live school environment, ensuring minimal disruption to students and staff.

Our Solution

Walkwayz delivered a multi-stage infrastructure upgrade that combined covered walkways, shade structures, accessibility improvements and outdoor learning and recreational environments into a cohesive campus-wide solution. Key features included:

  • Extensive covered walkway network connecting existing buildings, demountable classrooms and key student circulation routes, ensuring flexibility to relocate demountable buildings in the future.
  • New weather-protected bus set-down area, including accessible ramps, stairs and handrails to improve student safety and accessibility.
  • Large-scale covered amphitheatre with tiered seating, creating a sheltered outdoor learning space capable of accommodating entire year groups.
  • New grandstand structure providing all weather protection next to oval.
  • Integrated landscaping, retaining walls, crushed granite pathways and site improvements to enhance usability and appearance.
  • Carefully staged delivery, including school holiday and out-of-hours works, ensuring ongoing access to classrooms and school facilities throughout construction.

The Result

The completed project has transformed the way students and staff move through and use the campus. The new covered walkways provide reliable all-weather connectivity across the school, while improved accessibility features create safer and more inclusive pathways for students, staff and visitors. The amphitheatre and grandstand have introduced valuable outdoor learning, assembly and recreation spaces, enhancing how the school community gathers and interacts. Despite the complexity of a large multi-stage project, the works were successfully delivered on time and within budget with minimal disruption to school operations. The result is a safer, more connected and future-ready campus that supports the school’s evolving needs while providing long-term value, functionality and peace of mind for the entire community.
